Dakrong is a rural mountainous southwest borderland of Quang Tri province. Established on 01.01.1997 by gathering 10 communes of Huong Hoa and 3 communes of Trieu Phong District, with the natural are of 122.300 hectares. Currently, Dakrong’s population is more than 31 529 people. Đakrông has 14 administrative units including Krong Klang town and 13 communes, that are: A Bung, A Ngo, A Vao, Ba Long, Ba Nang, Da Krong, Hai Phuc, Huc Nghi, Huong Hiep, Mo O, Ta Long, Ta Rut, Trieu Nguyen. Located at 16017'55'' to 16049'12'' North latitude and 106044'01'' to 107014'15'' east longitude, Dakrong ‘s north both borders is adjoining with Gio Linh, Cam Lo; Thua Thien - Hue and the Democratic Republic of Laos on the south : Trieu Phong and Hai Lang on the east and Huong Hoa on the west.

Dakrong residents are not only Champa people but also ethnic minorities like Van Kieu, Paco and Kinh people . From 1831 when the Nguyen dynasty established Quang Tri province, Đakrông has been officially belong to Quang Tri and to the province of Binh Tri Thien since then to 1976. Up to 18/05/1981 Đakrông commune was founded on the basis of merging Talieng, Pa out Step , Chan Leak villages which separated from Ba Ta Long village and Ba Ngao, Lang Cat, Vung Kho. A Tuc, A Xoc and Ky Noi communes ( fomerly in Huong Hoa district ) were combined into one named A Tuc.

Besides ethnic minorities as Ba Hy, Van Kieu and Pa Co, Dakrong residents are mainly Kinh people. Up to 2005, the population is approximately 34 160 people .Although conplexly mixed amongst various ethnic composition, Dakrong residents’ coexistence has underwent and struggled with nature and invaders to become a solid union, which is indispensable to Vietnamese community in general and Quang tri resident in particular.
